Why are the tropics eerily quiet right now? | Tracking the Tropics

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — With Ernesto expected to fizzle out soon, the tropics are quiet once again.

Ernesto was barely clinging to hurricane strength before it became a post-tropical cyclone early Tuesday morning.

The storm had maximum sustained winds of 70 mph over the northern Atlantic, as of the National Hurricane Center’s 11 a.m. update. It was the final advisory on Ernesto.

It is forecast to dissipate on Wednesday. Swells generated by the storm continued to affect the northeast coast of the United States and Atlantic Canada, leading to an increased risk of rip currents and rough surf.

Otherwise, the tropics are quiet, with no new development expected within the next seven days.
