SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV)—A sister city is a long-term partnership between two communities that can be countries and oceans apart.

Savannah has five sister cities in total, from varying countries around the World.

    • Bat’umi, Georgia
    • Halle, Germany
    • Jiujiang, Jiangxi, China
    • Kaya, Burkina Faso
    • Patras, Greece

According to Sister Cities International, “A relationship is officially recognized after the highest elected or appointed official from both communities sign off on an agreement to become sister cities.”

Sister cities are independent and can pursue activities that are important to their community including municipal, business, trade, educational, and cultural exchanges and projects with each other, Sister Cities International said on their website.

While some may think that Charleston is a sister city to Savannah, they are not sister cities technically. Sister cities must be from different countries, according to Sister Cities International.
