SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz are making their first joint visit to the Peach State.

Harris and Walz landed in Savannah on Wednesday afternoon at the Air Dominance Center greeted by Democrats Mayor Van Johnson, Chatham County Chairman Chester Ellis and Rep. Nikema Williams (5th District) and a group of supporters.

They traveled to Liberty County High School where they spoke with band members.

“Your generation, all that you guys stand for, everything you have at stake is what is going to propel our country into the next era of what we can do and what we can be,” Harris told the students.

On Wednesday night Harris and Walz grabbed a bite at Sandfly BBQ.

On Thursday, following a bus tour, they’ll cap off the trip at a rally in Savannah. According to the Democratic Party of Chatham County, it’s expected to take place between 2-8 p.m. at the Enmarket Arena.

The Harris-Walz campaign says this will be the first time a presidential nominee will have campaigned in the Hostess City since the 1990s.

“Savannah is a very unique city,” said Rep. Edna Jackson of District 165. “It is a city where people basically get along. It’s a very diverse community, it’s a community that works with everyone and I give kudos to our Mayor Van Johnson for continuing all of that, and for her to come here, to come to a city where people are not fussing with each other, it makes another kind of statement.”

This will be the vice president’s second visit to Savannah this year, following her Fight for Reproductive Freedom tour stop in February.

In all, it’s her seventh visit to the state this year, her team said.

“Campaigning in southern Georgia is critical as it represents a diverse coalition of voters, including rural, suburban, and urban Georgians – with a large proportion of Black voters and working class families,” a statement from the Harris-Walz campaign reads.

Morgan Ackley, Team Trump Georgia Communications Director, provided the following statement about the bus tour:

“While our highly engaged and energetic operation in Georgia is focused on turning out votes across the entire state, Democrats in Georgia are finally learning an important lesson…there is more to Georgia than just Atlanta. Republicans from Catoosa to Camden County and everywhere in between are fired up and ready to re-elect President Donald J. Trump because his message of putting America first again resonates with Americans of all backgrounds.”
