BLUFFTON, S.C. (WSAV)—After Stanley Kotowski succumbed to his mental health struggles this week on Hilton Head Island, the topic of mental health is more prevalent than ever.

Mental health is a tough subject that many people find difficult to talk about, often leaving those who struggle with it feeling isolated and afraid to seek help.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in the Lowcountry is dedicated to helping locals who are struggling with their mental health. They said that the stigmas surrounding mental health conditions can make it challenging for individuals to reach out for support, leading them to cope through other, often unhealthy, means.

“Many times, when people are suffering, they may not be at a crisis point, but pre-crisis,” Executive Director of NAMI Lowcountry, Michelle Casey, said. “They might be managing with alcohol, an addiction, or behaviors that are just not healthy for them. So, if people can learn what we offer and know that we exist, they can often avert a crisis.”

Casey acknowledges that seeking help can be intimidating but emphasizes that NAMI is here to help.

“We want people to understand that when you come to us, we’ve been there, we know how it feels,” Casey said.

NAMI offers educational classes, family to family mental health education classes and support groups for individuals dealing with mental health issues. They also offer family to family mental health education classes.

NAMI’s helpline is available Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 10 PM. If you need support, you can call 800-950-6264 or text HELPLINE to 62640. If you are in crisis, please call 988.
