LIBERTY COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) – Liberty County Animal Services is turning to the community to help clear their shelter and find a forever home for their furry visitors.

Steve Marrero, director of Liberty County Animal Services, takes care of the animals day in and day out. With a team of seven, they not only provide for the animals but also provide for the community. As time passes, they continue to deal with overcrowding, managing with just 16 kennels. He said he has not seen a clear shelter since 2022.

“We’ve been running 100% since then,” Marrero said. “The numbers say it. Whether it be our euthanasia has increased, intakes have increase and it’s just getting worse.”

He continued, “We only have two quarantine rooms, so if those two rooms get taken up…we’re forced to having to euthanize.”

There are a number of animals that need tender, love and care. Marrero told News 3 the shelter is not meant to be a permanent home for them.

For those looking to adopt, the Liberty County Animal Services uses the foster-to-adopt program.

The shelter will have to do a mandatory home check before allowing the fostering process to start. Marrero advises anyone interested to keep the animal for a couple of days. If the customer still wants to go through with the adoption, the adopter foster coordinator will make an appointment for them to get fixed at Pet Fix in Savannah. The adoption is finalized after the animal is altered.

“Our goal is not for them to just leave,” Marrero said. “It’s for them to leave with the perfect family. If you’re looking for an animal, this is a great place to stop. We care.”
