SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV)- President and CEO of Waffle House, Walt Ehmer, has died.

On Saturday, the Atlanta Police Foundation announced Ehmer’s passing. Ehmer not only oversaw the restaurant chain since 2012, but he was also a beloved member of the Atlanta Police Foundation’s Board of Trustees.

“Walt was a dedicated leader, tireless advocate for public safety, and an unwavering supporter of our mission to build a safer, stronger Atlanta. His passion for community service and steadfast commitment to improving the lives of others will leave a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. He will be greatly missed.” the foundation said.

Governor Brian Kemp said, “Marty, the girls, and I are deeply saddened to hear of Walt Ehmer’s Passing. His years of leadership and dedication not just to Waffle House, but to the communities they served during times of calm and times of devasting crisis, will be remembered by all those who were touched by his generosity. The Ehmer family, the Waffle House community, and all those who loved Walt are in our prayers as they navigate this difficult time.”

The first Waffle House restaurant was opened in 1955, by Georgia neighbors Joe Rogers Sr. and Tom Forkner, who were living in Avondale Estates.

They decided to open a 24-hour, sit-down restaurant for their friends and neighbors, focused on people on both sides of the counter.

That first restaurant opened the door to create the Waffle House brand seen today.

The Waffle House system has since grown to over 1,900 locations in 25 states. All are open 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
