SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Animal shelters across the nation and here at home are all facing the same problem: overcrowding.

“Everybody in Savannah can probably go adopt three animals right now,” said Lisa Scarborough, “and you turn around tomorrow and every animal control shelter would still be full.”

Scarborough, the director and founder of Coastal Pet Rescue in Savannah, says in her 21-year career, she’s never seen this many animals being surrendered.

“We will never have enough homes for all of the animals that are already in shelters and rescues,” she said. “The trends right now nationwide are this is the highest euthanasia rate since COVID.”

You can save a life by adopting, but first, remember the commitment it takes.

“Before you commit to an animal, go spend time with them,” Scarborough advised. “Go volunteer at a shelter. Go volunteer at a rescue. Go see what animal fits you best.

“Just because you like the certain look of an animal doesn’t mean that’s actually the right fit for you. They all have personalities.”

The animal rescue serves Bryan, Chatham and Effingham counties.
