STATESBORO, Ga. (WSAV) — As Statesboro and Glynn Academy prepare for our WSAV Game of the Week on Friday, a player you should keep an eye on is Statesboro’s wide receiver and defensive back Keon Childers.

Childers was not happy with playing on the junior varsity, saying that it was hard for him.

“I wasn’t really liking it,” Childers said. “It wasn’t good for me. I just wanted to be a varsity player, a leader. I work, I put my time into it, I’m dedicated and I’m here.”

He knew wanted to tap into his potential. He wanted to play at the top level. Childers remembers the Nov. 10 moment when he scored a touchdown in a 49-28 upset win over Tucker.

“My teammates, I loved it,” Childers said. “It was the first touchdown we scored to. I loved it. My teammates were all hyped and I was hyped. I was glad that was my first touchdown and I was glad we came out with the dub that game too.”

Now that Childers has cemented his role on the varsity level. His head coach is seeing him become more or a vocal leader.

“He leads by example for sure and he’s probably a quiet guy,” Dobson said, “but he has taken a step outside of his comfort zone a little bit. He will speak up when we need him to. I’m proud of that. A lot of guys won’t do that. They are not comfortable doing it, but he’s kind of getting out of his comfort zone a little bit and will say stuff to guys to try to get them going a little bit. I’m proud of him for that leadership.”

And Childers’s confidence extends to his team.

“Just wait for this season,” Childers said. “It’s going to be a movie for sure.”

Statesboro hosts Glynn Academy in our WSAV Game of the Week this Friday at 7:30 p.m.
