Savannah, GA. (WSAV) – Our next full moon occurs this week, but something different occurs with this one. The Full Harvest Moon this month happens to be a supermoon AND a partial lunar eclipse! It is our second supermoon of the year along with the eclipse…definitely something worth checking out.

This full moon will peak around 10:34 pm on Tuesday night. This full moon will be a supermoon. According to NASA, a supermoon occurs when a new or full Moon is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth. These moons appear bigger and brighter looking as they are closer to Earth.

A partial lunar eclipse will also occur during this supermoon. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth aligns between the sun and the moon casting a shadow. Lunar eclipses only occur during full moons. During a partial lunar eclipse, only part of the moon enters Earth’s shadow. This is what is expected to occur on Tuesday night.

The partial lunar eclipse will start at 8:41 pm when the moon starts to enter Earth’s penumbra. The eclipse peak will occur at 10:44 pm where the moon will be in the umbra. It will come to an end at 12:47 am. The total duration of this eclipse is 4 hours and 6 minutes.

Conditions could go either way. We are tracking a partly cloudy sky on Tuesday. But, we will continue to keep you updated on air!
