WALTERBORO, S.C. (WSAV) — The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) said that there was an officer-involved shooting that took place in the parking lot of Ruby Tuesday on Tuesday night.

CCSO said that deputies were called to assist Walterboro Police Department (WPD) in response to a subject actively vandalizing vehicles in the parking lot by slashing tires and breaking windows. Citizens tried to approach the subject, but he was armed with a knife, they said.

CCSO said that when the deputy attempted to engage with the subject, he refused to drop the knife and then attacked the deputy with the knife. The deputy fired his weapon.

The subject died, the CCSO said.

CCSO said they has requested SLED to investigate, and several witnesses are being interviewed which is standard protocol. They also said that it is standard procedure for the deputy to be placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
