SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – A man convicted of voluntary manslaughter and arrested for allegedly shooting at police officers in Savannah is facing new charges.

In an indictment handed down this week in Chatham County, Gregory Griffin was charged with murdering a woman in June just days before the shooting with officers of the Savannah Police Department.

Court documents accuse Griffin of killing Lexus Mutcherson on North Lathrop Avenue and then stealing her car.

Days prior, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), officers attempted to conduct a vehicle stop on Griffin on E Victory Drive after recognizing him as a suspect in a homicide.

The GBI said Griffin got out of the vehicle and ran away from officers who began chasing him. He allegedly pulled out a gun and shot at the officers who returned fire and hit Griffin.

He was taken to a hospital with injuries, and no officers were hurt.

According to records from the Georgia Department of Corrections, Griffin was out on parole when the officer-involved shooting happened.

In 2014, he was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm during a crime in connection to the killing of 19-year-old Rasheen Alexander.

Griffin served eight years of his 20-year sentence before he was let out on parole.

His new charges include malice murder.
