    LIVE UPDATES: Hurricane warnings across north GA counties as Helene makes landfall

    Hurricane Helene has made landfall on Florida’s Big Bend. The storm will be moving through Georgia during the overnight hours and Friday morning.

    Severe Weather Team 2 has been tracking Helene for days and its path for Georgia.

    Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Brad Nitz says damaging winds, significant flooding and brief tornadoes will accompany Helene as it moves through our area.

    The National Weather Service has issued a rare high risk for flooding for most of Georgia.

    Butts, Jasper, Lamar, Pike, Spalding and Upson counties are under a Hurricane Warning.

    11:21 p.m.

    2 people have been killed in a possible tornado in south Georgia as Hurricane Helene approaches. They were in a mobile home, Wheeler County Sheriff Randy Rigdon said.

    10:13 p.m.

    Helene makes landfall in northwestern Florida as a Category 4 hurricane.

    9:23 p.m.

    A Flash Flood Warning has been issued for Barrow, Butts, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Lamar, Pike, Rockdale, Spalding, Upson and Walton counties until 3:15 a.m. Friday.

    9:16 p.m.

    Frog Road at Luella Road in Locust Grove is flooded and barricades are up.

    8:39 p.m.

    Brookhaven Police Department said there are multiple sinkholes along Buford Highway in the 3500 block.

    8:07 p.m.

    Flash Flood Warning issued for Rabun County until 1:00 a.m. Friday.

    7:06 p.m.

    Sustained tropical-storm-force winds are being reported along the west coast of Florida.

    6:26 p.m.

    Hurricane Helene has been upgraded to a dangerous Category 4 storm.

    5:47 p.m.

    The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office is asking people to shelter in place ahead of Helene.

    “Ensure you have food, water, medications, a flashlight, candles and other necessities. Once you have what you need, please shelter in place unless it is an emergency to leave your home. Street flooding can be life-threatening, so please report any street flooding and never drive through water on the road.”

    Hurricane Warnings have been expanded north to include Butts, Jasper, Pike and Spalding counties. Lamar and Upson counties were previously the one Channel 2 Action News counties under a Hurricane Warning.

    Due to Hurricane Helene, Amtrak has implemented service adjustments. The Amtrak Crescent, which operates daily between New York and New Orleans, including a stop in Atlanta, is cancelled today and Friday.
