At about 3:30 p.m., Salisbury police detectives tried to arrest Smith at 525 West Jake Alexander Boulevard on several charges but he drove away, which started a pursuit involving multiple agencies.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom spotted several law enforcement vehicles pursuing the car driving erratically in northeast Charlotte. The Highway Patrol said speeds reached up to 130 mph on Interstate 85.

The pursuit ended at University Northside apartments off Newland Hickory Grove Road when a man jumped out and was taken into custody.

“My heart was racing,” said resident Katie White. “I was shaking. It’s not very often you see a bunch of cops in a parking lot with guns and rifles so that’s what made me nervous, and my son was here. “Obviously, I was worried for him too.”

Smith was arrested on several charges including first-degree kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon, child abuse, having a stolen car, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Those charges stem from Rowan, Iredell, and Forsyth counties.

Smith is in the Rowan County jail under no bond due to a pre-trial release violation.

Authorities said there were no injuries or small children in the car.

Smith’s charges included these active warrants: Fictitious information to officer, driving while license revoked, four counts of first-degree kidnapping, robbery with dangerous weapon, misdemeanor child abuse, misdemeanor hit and run, reckless driving to endanger, neglect child abuse with serious body injury, possession of methamphetamine, possession with intent to sell and deliver Schedule II, trafficking in opium or heroin, felony possession of cocaine, possession with intent to sell and delivery cocaine, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Smith was charged with the following crimes during the chase: Two counts of felony elude arrest, two counts of possession of a stolen vehicle, failure to heed light or siren, speeding, reckless driving, driving while license revoked, fictitious tag, and failure to wear a seatbelt.
