Arrest made after man shoots Albemarle Police Department

A man is in custody for allegedly shooting the Albemarle Police Department and one of their patrol cars. The car was empty at the time of the shooting, investigators said.

Police believe James Edgar Amaendus Kindell, 38, was the gunman. He was arrested Tuesday in New London and is being held at the Stanly County jail.

The shooting happened Sunday around 5:15 a.m. at 155 W. South Street. Police said no one was injured.

Kindell was charged in 2020 for shooting the former APD headquarters on Second Street. That case is still pending court proceedings, police said.

In this most recent case, Kindell was charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling, injury to real property, injury to personal property, and discharging a firearm inside the city limits.
