55-year-old woman reported missing in Monroe, police say

The Monroe Police Department is searching for a 55-year-old woman who has been reported missing.

Audrey Kay Mcrae was last seen by family members on Tuesday. Police believe she could have traveled to Charlotte or the Raleigh area.

Mcrae is described as 5 feet 4 inches and weighs between 160 and 180 pounds. She is known to change her hair color, so it might be black or blonde, according to police.

Channel 9′s Almiya White spoke with Mcrae’s sisters, who said their top priority is to make sure she is found safe.

“It’s just five girls, and a part of that is missing because we can’t put the other piece together,” Mcrae’s sister Denise Winnegin said.

Mcrae’s other sister, Layturnya Winnegin, said they are used to going two months without hearing from her.

“Her going this long without being in contact; that’s not like her. She generally stays in contact with her daughter, and her daughter hasn’t heard from her,” Layturnya Winnegin said.

The family told Channel 9 that Mcrae was in an abusive relationship. Police, however, have not said if that partner was involved in her disappearance or not.

According to court documents, that partner was charged with assault on a family and domestic violence. Mcrae’s name is listed as the victim in those cases.

“I’m just trying to keep her positive thought, but I don’t think, I don’t think ... I just know something’s not right,” Layturnya Winnegin explained.

The family said that they are hoping for a phone call with good news and are leaning on the community to help find their sister.

“We just need everybody’s help right now, not just one; we need everybody. And we usually don’t ask for help if we try to do it ourselves, but this time, we need help,” Denise Winnegin elaborated.
