CHEROKEE COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – Abbeville County School District and Cherokee County School District announced that students will participate in eLearning while Laurens County School District 55 will have an early dismissal for the solar eclipse.

According to the Cherokee County School District, the eclipse is expected to occur during the afternoon dismissal times on April 8, “posing a potential safety risk to our students and staff.”

Officials from Abbeville County School District said that middle and high school after-school activities and athletics will not be allowed until after 4 p.m.

Athletic and after-school activities for Cherokee County School District will be allowed at 5 p.m. on that day.

Laurens County District 55 will have an early dismissal to “prioritize the safety of students and school bus drivers,” while there will be no academic after-school programs. Athletic events and practice times will be adjusted as needed beginning at 4 p.m.

Dismissal times for Laurens County District 55 are as follows:

    • Elementary students at 11:30 a.m.
