Team defends Hub City Spartanburgers name

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – Just two days after announcing the Hub City Spartanburgers, the team is defending their choice of name.

The name was revealed Saturday at the community block party in downtown Spartanburg.

Once the name was revealed, many supported the return of the name but many were against it.

“We genuinely care about the vision and goal for this team and as much as you all think we just wanted to RIP off the old name, we wanted to provide some content and context about how we envision the future of this team!,” Hub City Spartanburgers said.

On Monday, the Hub City Spartanburgers commented on Facebook the four reasons why it chose to continue with the name:

• Hub City – homage to this amazing city that is growing, and we are honored to be part of it. From the railroads to the epicenter of Spartanburg, we want to be the glue that honestly helps us bridge the Eastside vs Westside – as you already know they do not “cross” or become a Hub (even with the name). lol
• Spartanburgers – the people here with the name Spartanburgers resonates just like people who call themselves “New Yorkers” – it’s the people that make the city and baseball is part of that city. I know some people “baulk” at this one, but we think it is true.
• With Dennys, The Beacon, and Spartan Food Distribution – Spartanburg is a foodie town! So having it also play on the “Burger” side of Spartanburgers – we think it was puny and played into something that we could stand behind as MiLB teams are based on fun, engaging content that we hope you can all enjoy & laugh with during our upcoming inaugural season.
• With Spartanburg having so many “layers” and we took that into consideration when looking at this name, we think that nothing has more layers than a burger with the bun, ketchup, lettuce, tomato, onion, burger patty, pickles, and bun again (with the option for mayo & such).

The Hub City Spartanburgers is the future affiliate of the Texas Rangers in the MiLB.
