As the best-of-three state championship series opened on the diamond for four area teams Monday evening, Laurens built a 2-0 lead in the first at James Island in the 4A title series only to see the Trojans rally for a 5-4 victory.

James Island can wrap-up the series Wednesday night at Laurens. The Raiders are trying for their first state title since 1990.

Powdersville saw a tight game at Hanahan get away from them in a 9-5 loss to the Hawks.

Game two is Wednesday night at Powdersville as the Patriots try to keep alive their hopes for the decade-and-a-half-old school’s first baseball crown.

Southside Christian is attempting to win its third straight 1A crown and behind the stellar pitching of Carson Bolman knocked-off Latta on the road, 8-6. Bolman did not allow a hit into the sixth inning and exited without letting the Vikings score.

SCS can claim another crown with a win Tuesday night.

BHP is the lone area softball team in contention for a state championship and the Bears won their opener, 2-1 in nine innings, on a crazy play against Aynor.

With the bases loaded and none out, Madi Boggs stood at third as Meg Griffin attempted to lay down a bunt on an apparent squeeze play. Griffin missed, but Boggs induced a rundown and beat the throw home for the winning run. Kinsley Kay went the distance in the circle with nine strikeouts for the Bears.

BHP can claim its first state crown with a win at Aynor Wednesday night.
