LAURENS, S.C. (WSPA) – Laurens County School District 55 has officially hired its next superintendent.

The Laurens District 55 School Board approved Dr. Jody Penland as the district’s next superintendent.

Penland was previously assistant superintendent for pupil services at Laurens District 55.

“I am truly humbled by the outpouring of support, prayers, and love I received over the past several weeks,” said Penland, in a statement. “As we move forward as a district and community, stability, consistency, and integrity must be at the core of our system so we can provide the best opportunities for our students and the best working environment for our staff. It is an honor and privilege to lead the district where I live, worship, and have raised my boys is truly an honor and a privilege.”

Penland and Dr. Rhett Harris had been in charge of day-to-day operations of the district on an interim basis after Dr. Ameca Thomas resigned in January.

Penland was chosen from among three finalists for the position .
