Clemson defeats South Carolina in Palmetto Series

(WSPA) – Clemson University captured the annual Palmetto Series trophy for the 2023-2024 season.

The Palmetto Series, sponsored by the South Carolina Education Lottery, began in August and finished in May. Points were given to the winner of each athletic event between the two universities. Points were also awarded to the school who won the most scholarship recipients for multiple lottery categories.

The Tigers defeated the Gamecocks in a close Palmetto Series that ended in a 7-6 victory. Clemson gained their wins in men’s soccer, football, men’s basketball, baseball, women’s cross country, and men’s golf. The final point was earned when the Tigers received the most Palmetto Fellows Scholarship recipients to give them the slight edge over the Gamecocks.

Both women’s soccer and softball ended in ties, which prevented both universities from receiving points. Women’s soccer didn’t compete against one another this year, while the two game softball series resulted in a 1-1 tie.

“We are privileged to be in a state with such a competitive rivalry in many athletic and academic areas, and we know how much pride our state has for our higher education institutions and our athletic programs,” said Graham Neff, Clemson Director of Athletics.

Clemson will look to defend their title next year during their 50th year of varsity women’s athletics.

The trophy will be presented to the Tigers on September 7 during their football game against Appalachian State.
