MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCBD) – Damage was reported in Moncks Corner early Tuesday morning as Tropical Storm Debby lashed the area.

“It seems like we’ve had some type of event – microburst, tornado, we don’t know yet – come off the Tail Race and come through this plaza,” said Moncks Corner Mayor Thomas Hamilton.

Damage was reported near US Highway 52 and caused damage to the Arby’s restaurant and other businesses. Cars were also flipped over during the weather event.

“Damaged the Arbys, went between the Walmart and the Dollar Tree building. Luckily, we have minor injuries. It didn’t hit any residential, so we’re really blessed,” added Mayor Hamilton.

Mayor Hamilton asked residents to stay away from the Walmart area while emergency personnel were on the scene.

Moncks Corner Fire Chief Robert Gass also asked residents to stay home as the storm approaches. “There’s no reason to get out and sightsee,” he said.

Chief Gass said damage was surveyed in the dark and that most were identified, but he warned that there could be elements of damage that could be dangerous for the public. “Just avoid the area and during the storm, stay home,” he said.

No tornado has been confirmed for the Moncks Corner area as of Tuesday morning.
