GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) – An Upstate man was given South Carolina’s highest civilian honor during an event Tuesday in Greenville.

Surendra Jain received the Order of the Palmetto during a Rotary Club of Greenville meeting held at the Poinsett Hotel in downtown Greenville.

Leaders at the club said Jain was the first known Indian to live in Greenville after immigrating to the United States in the 1960s.

That’s when they said his decades of service began and he continues his work to promote peace in the community.

Jain, 85, continues to be an active member of the Rotary Club and participant in service projects.

The Order of the Palmetto recognizes a lifetime of extraordinary achievement, service, and contributions on a statewide scale.
