SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The severe storm that happened Saturday night has left some residents in Spartanburg with extensive storm damage.

Spartanburg residents said Saturday’s storm was a recipe for disaster.

“Really, really like strong winds, the lightning you could just hear it, it was just terrible, just cracking, it really scared me and my kids, you could hear the wind hallowing and you could hear the trees breaking,” Resident, Christan Kirby said.

The storm left behind widespread damage from broken siding, to downed trees and snapped power lines. Spartanburg resident, Mason Matsuda told 7NEWS he returned from work Saturday night to find a live wire in his backyard.

“We had a live wire in the back so we couldn’t walk out of the house,” Matsuda said. “We didn’t want to be out in the yard just in case.”

Matsuda said it took nearly 24 hours for his power to be restored, and a tree company had to cut a path in his back yard for the power company to repair the line.

“I had a whole flat backyard with the trees and now, I mean my yard is gone. There is no yard, there is no fence, it’s just gone,” Matsuda said.

He said he has to figure out how to clean the mess, “this tree landed onto this tree, and that tree took the line out. I had about 4 big (trees) back here and they all seem to be kind of everywhere right now.”

But Matsuda said that he is thankful, the disaster in his backyard didn’t reach his house.

“It came right to the edge (of the house) and it didn’t even pull the wire off the wall either,” Matsuda said. “It just snapped it down and it was hanging. So, definitely lucky. I am glad it didn’t get to the house, it’s right there, these windows, everything on the house is good.”

More than 400 homes were still without power in the city on Sunday.
