GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – Efforts by the Greenville Arena District to issue millions of dollars in bonds, requiring a tax increase, are being paused.

The $70 million in bonds is set to help fund $170 million in renovations to Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

A public hearing scheduled for Tuesday’s Greenville County Council meeting has been canceled.

If approved, taxes would increase for those in the Greenville Arena District from 0.3 mills to 1.5 mills.

The district includes much of central Greenville County, including the cities of Greenville, Mauldin, Simpsonville, Fountain Inn, Travelers Rest, and much of Greer.

After public pushback on the tax proposal, Greenville County Council will send the plan back to their finance committee.

County council member Liz Seman said the plan will likely make its way back to council within the next year.

The arena is also seeking funding from the state and other investments to complete upgrades to the arena.

Construction on the arena would be completed in phases.
