CHARLOTTE ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — An Interstate 485 ramp was closed Thursday for hours following a deadly multi-vehicle accident, according to CMPD and NCDOT.

The wreck happened at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, on I-485 Outer near Mt Holly Road. The ramp to Mt Holly Road (NC 27) was shut down for several hours.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, officers were in the area for the report of a stolen vehicle on the shoulder of I-485 at Mt Holly Road.

As the officers were investigating, they said an uninvolved vehicle struck two CMPD police vehicles and the person who was reporting the stolen vehicle to officers.

CMPD said the person reporting the stolen vehicle to officers was pronounced deceased at the scene. An officer who was pinned in his vehicle was transported to a nearby hospital and was alert Thursday morning, CMPD said. A second officer was transported to a nearby hospital as a precaution, CMPD said. No identities have been released at this time.

“Our prayers go out to the family of the person killed in the incident on I-485. We wish a speedy recovery for the two CMPD officers who were injured,” Char-Meck FOP said. “We send our thanks to all the law enforcement and medical agencies who responded to help.”

Queen City News was at the scene Thursday morning where there was a heavy police presence. A tractor-trailer and a motor home are among the vehicles involved in the crash.

I-485 traffic was still flowing in both directions, with just the ramp impacted Thursday.

Several agencies responded to the scene Thursday including the Major Crash Investigation Unit, CMPD’s Animal Care & Control Unit, and a mass causality bus.

The ramp was projected to reopen by 4:30 p.m., according to NCDOT.
