OCONEE COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – Officials with the state Department of Natural Resources will be out this weekend to offer courtesy boat inspections.

According to SCDNR, Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest boating times of the year in South Carolina, and the department is hoping to keep folks safe on the water.

Throughout the holiday weekend, inspectors with DNR will be offering courtesy boat inspections at lakes and rivers across the states.

Those who are not in compliance with safety regulations or registration requirements will not be ticketed during the complimentary inspections. Instead, they will be given an opportunity to correct the problem before they launch their boat. SCDNR officers will also be available to answer questions and give boaters tips on how to stay safe on the water.

Inspectors will be at Fall Creek Landing on Lake Keowee 10 a.m. to Noon on Saturday and Monday, and at River Forks Recreation Area on Lake Hartwell 10 a.m. – noon Sunday.

To report boating violations such as reckless operation or an intoxicated boat operator, call the SCDNR toll-free, 24-hour hotline at 1-800-922-5431 or dial #DNR on your cell phone.
