LAURENS COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – The Laurens City Fire Department responded to a house fire on Wednesday evening, on Cora Street.

Fire Chief, Neal Roberts, said that neighbors pulled the victim out of the fire. The victim was identified as 86-year-old Emma Jean “Jessie” Simmons, of Laurens.

Simmons was airlifted to Greenville Memorial and later flown to Augusta Burn Center to receive further treatment, the Laurens County Coroner’s Office said.

Simmons succumbed to her injuries on Thursday. The Laurens County Coroner’s Office said an autopsy will be conducted on Monday to determine the cause of death.
