GREER, S.C. (WSPA) – An Upstate middle school student has been charged after making verbal threats during a class last week.

The Greer Police Department said a 13-year-old Greer Middle School student was charged on Friday in relation to verbal threats of a shooting in the school.

Reports state a school resource officer was made aware of the threats made during a class Thursday. Administration immediately began investigating and removed the student from the school.

Police said the threat was isolated to Greer Middle School only.

In addition to the charges, the student will be disciplined in accordance to the district’s behavior code.

In a message to parents this afternoon, Greer Middle School Principal Stephanie Lackey said a separate report regarding a threat made on social media was determined to be in reference to the same situation.

Officials said there is no threat to the school or its students.

The EVOLV weapons detection system was on campus Monday morning.

The report comes on the heels of several threats to local schools. Officials reminded students and parents that the best protocol when it comes to school safety is if you see something, say something.

If only the school notified us when they first found out on Thursday afternoon!!! They could have saved a lot of panic this morning if they didn't allow the misinformation to spread. How are we as parents supposed to trust that these schools will keep our children safe when they actively lie and keep important information from us?! The best protocol would be to keep our children home because the schools keep failing them
