GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) – Before the Greenville Drive took the field for their season finale on Sunday, someone special took the field.

With his family by his side, Cpl. Lucas Watts, an Oconee County deputy who was shot in the line of duty in 2023, threw the ceremonial first pitch to start the game.

According to the drive, Sunday’s game was the First Responder’s Game at Fluor Field.

“We were honored to have him today and to thank him for his selfless service to the community. Best wishes to him and his family in his continued recovery,” the team said in a Facebook post.

After he was shot during a traffic stop in November 2023, Watts spent several months in recovery. He returned home in May of this year, and in July was recognized as the state’s Deputy of the Year by the South Carolina Sheriff’s Association.
