HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (WSPA) – Henderson County held a September 11 remembrance ceremony Wednesday morning in Hendersonville.

The ceremony was held at the Historic Courthouse in downtown Hendersonville.

Law enforcement officers, firefighters, and other first responders were in attendance for the ceremony which began at 9 a.m.

The Henderson County Emergency Services Director Jimmy Brissie said the day was about service and remembering what happened on September 11, 2001.

“Despite challenges that we see and differences that we see, we as a nation stand strong and continue to stand strong together,” said Brissie. “Here in Henderson County, that’s evident. You look at our first responders, our law enforcement officers, fire service, EMS, rescue workers, telecommunicators, they stand alongside each other every day to protect and serve our community.”

“I think remembering is key. If we forget, we’re doomed to repeat it,” said Henderson County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy David Mahoney. “I think that our nation needs to remember, not only the sacrifice of the men and woman that we serving, but we also need to remember how we came together after that. To me, it’s one of the highlights and takeaways of September 11, 2001 is how we as a nation came together.”
