SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – Six deaths related to Tropical Storm Helene were reported Friday morning in Spartanburg County.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office said the deaths were at five separate locations in the county.

At Rainbow Circle in Inman, a tree fell on a woman’s house while she was inside. The coroner’s office identified this woman as 34-year-old Anna Maria Smith.

Two people died when a tree fell on two people riding in a golf cart, on Earles Fort Road in Landrum. The decedents have been identified as Christopher Mark Owens, 64, and Derrill Eugene “Gene” Pitts, 70, of Landrum.

About a mile and a half away, the coroner said a man was attempting to go across water that had overtaken Highway 14 near Earles Fort Road. A swift water rescue team was able to recover the body. The victim was identified as 88-year-old Ralph Selle, of Columbus.

A tree fell on a camper located on Revels Road in the Chesnee community, Friday evening. One person was located inside the camper, asleep, when the tree fell. The victim was identified as Alvaro Burgos-Guitierrez, 41.

The coroner’s office initially reported that one person died when a tree fell on a home in the western part of the county, but officials specified that the person’s death was not storm-related.

A man in Chesnee was the sixth Helene related death in Spartanburg, where he was pronounced dead after carbon monoxide poisoning. The man was identified as 68-year-old Jimmy Lee Wall.
