SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – Officials in Spartanburg County provided an update Monday on Helene recovery.

“The worst storm in probably the history of Spartanburg County,” county councilmember David Britt described. “It just did damage that we weren’t even expecting.”

Multiple counties around the state have provided resources to assist Spartanburg County.

Cleanup of county roadways is continuing.

Residents are asked to move vegetative debris to the right of way along the road, keeping clear of obstacles like utility poles and mailboxes. The county said they will be picking up from every county road, regardless of whether you are in a private or HOA community.

They will make multiple passes though the county to pick up debris. Residents should not bag any of the debris. The county’s main landfill in Wellford is open for household waste and bagged waste.

A shelter for special medical needs is open at the Hodge Center at USC Upstate.

A pet-friendly general shelter will open at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium.

Sheriff Chuck Wright said they have received 911 calls for citizens clearing roads to help other people.

“If somebody is not stealing or hurting somebody, please do not dial 911, we’re overloaded,” said Wright.

Wright also reiterated that drivers have to stop at traffic lights if they are not working. They should be treated as four-way stops.

The county also announced it will be distributing bottled waters and MREs beginning at 5 p.m. Monday at SCC’s Tyger River Campus at 1875 E. Main Street in Duncan and at 9070 Highway 11 in Campobello.

Lyman First Baptist, located at 80 Groce Road, is opening its gym for those needing a warm shower. They are asking community members to bring their own towels and soap. They will be open Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
