    Recreation projects underway in Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. (WSPA) – Anderson city officials hope to get a multimillion dollar bond issued for two recreation projects at Linley Park and Cater’s Lake.

Officials said they believe the projects hold historical value to the community.

Linley Park is inching toward completion; city leaders said if council passes the second reading, $5.6 million dollars will be used to finish phase two.

“It’s just an important park that has historic value in the city,” said assistant city manager Andrew Strickland.” It was important to our council and our residents to put a new face on it.”

Leaders with Parks and Recreation explained that the master plan is to build a new playground with a rubber surface, updated restrooms and a new pavilion for families to enjoy.

With the new design, the city said crews are redoing the creek to strengthen its ability to handle heavy rain.

“The un-pretty stuff, the water and sewer infrastructure and the demolition is done and so, it’s really just starting to put it back to what it’s going to be in the future,” said Strickland.

The city plans to upgrade the century old picnic area at Cater’s Lake.

“We have folks who stop and have lunch out there, feed the ducks, take the kids out there and walk around,” Strickland said. “It’s just a nice low-key environment, but it’s just a little tired.”

Crews have plans to create a walkway leading to the picnic tables, as well as installing a covered bridge.

“It kind of serves as a gateway into downtown Anderson,” Strickland continued. “It’s nice that we’ll have some, some visual impact as well.”

The masterplan for these two projects has been in the works for seven years and the city says they’re determined to finish it.

Strickland said that those who live in the City of Anderson, or are even passing through, are encouraged to share project ideas with city leaders.

“If there’s a project that you’re passionate about as a resident or visitor to the City of Anderson, let us know,” he encouraged. “Let us know what that is and then if there’s a consensus, among the public, that we make an investment in a certain area, we’ll make it so, be involved.”

Officials said Linley Park is set to be complete by May 2025, with renovations for Cater’s Lake to start next month.
