BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WSPA) – Buncombe County Schools approved a plan Friday morning for students to return to school nearly a month after Hurricane Helene.

The first day of school for students will be Friday, October 25. The district will operate on a two-hour delay each day through November 1.

Due to the two-hour delay, October 31 will no longer be an early dismissal day.

The two-hour delay is to allow bus drivers to become accustomed to new bus routes after sunrise. New bus routes are being put in place due to damaged roads and washed out bridges following the storm.

Buncombe County Schools said they have power, internet, and non-potable water service at all 45 schools in the district.

Asheville City Schools said in a board meeting Tuesday that they planned to reopen the same day at Buncombe County and have the same length of school day but they have not yet made an official announcement.
