City of Clemson extends donation drive deadline

CLEMSON, S.C. (WSPA) – The City of Clemson will continue to receive donations to send to families in Western North Carolina and East Tennessee.

Soup, toothpaste and cleaning wipes — those are just a few of the long list of items that can be donated to help families in need.

Supplies are also being gathered for families in the Clemson community.

“Most of our families didn’t have power for almost a week,” explained assistant city administrator Alli Gantte. “Clemson Community Care, which is our local food pantry, was completely wiped out and their shelves were cleaned off. We don’t want to see anyone in our community suffer.”

In the last week, 250 pounds of food have been donated.

If you were worried about missing the donation drive, rest assured.

The city is accepting donations for another week.

“We decided that we were going to do this, and we’re actually going to extend it an additional week to give the community more time,” said Gantte.

The City of Clemson Police Department is also hosting a donation drive. Officials recommended donating blankets, generators, clothes and tents to make sure families stay warm as temperatures drop.

Police are accepting donations until Halloween.

“Those items will be going to Elizabethton, Tennessee which is outside of Johnson City, an area that was hit really hard with flooding,” said Gantte.

Although the devastation of Helene has taken a toll on many, the city said it hasn’t destroyed the love and care the community has always had.

“It’s been great to see our community come out and support one another, as well as support our neighbors in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. We are a special community,” Gantte said. “We care about each other and when times get tough, like we saw with hurricane Helene, it’s just wonderful to see the community come together and support one another person.”

Donation drop-off is at Council Chambers at City Hall, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
