Your Stories Q&A: Looking for firm answers about concrete panels on Onondaga Creekwalk

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – You ask, we answer!

Viewer Question: Why are there several new slabs/pieces of concrete placed along the Onondaga Creekwalk in Syracuse’s Inner Harbor?

You can find these 10-foot-tall concrete structures off Spencer Street, near The Preserve at 405 restaurant.

They’re part of Syracuse’s latest art project, called City As Canvas.

It’s described as a city-wide public art program, by the non-profit charitable organization, Tomorrow’s Neighborhoods Today (TNT).

TNT called the concrete structures, T-Panels. The panels will soon be painted with murals. It’s one of eight different murals throughout Syracuse, part of the City As Canvas initiative.

“This initiative is driven by the community throughout the entire process; from submitting ideas for mural locations within each neighborhood, to voting on the locations, to determining the final civic pride themed design submitted by local artists through a ranked-choice ballot process.” TNT said on its website .

TNT President and Syracuse City Common Councilor, Jimmy Monto, said the City As Canvas program was given $250,000 in federal funds in 2022 as part of the American Rescue Plan Act.

Monto said six of the eight neighborhood murals have been completed.

The concrete T-Panels and another mural in the Valley will be the last two to be finished. Monto said those would likely be done by the end of summer.
