SYRACUSE N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Eight people are without a home after a fire broke out at an apartment complex on Saturday, Oct. 19. Around 3:30 p.m. the Syracuse Fire Department received a call reporting an apartment fire on Croly Street.

When firefighters arrived on scene they found a two-story apartment building with large amounts of smoke coming from the first and second floors.

Firefighters assisted two people out of the building in an apartment not directly affected by the fire, all other building residents were not home or made it out before the Fire Department arrived.

“The crews got here quick, made an aggressive stretch up to the building from the outside and entered inside,” said fire Lieutenant Philip Vogt. “The fire was starting to grow on the outside so they got pulled back out by the incident commander. They knocked down some of that fire and ended up back inside. They had to open up the ceiling space to get to the trapped fire in the cockloft area.”

Firefighters were able to put out the fire in about one hour.

The fire damaged two apartments. The entire building suffered smoke and water damage. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
