CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — U.S. Senator Bob Casey announced the Mineral Basin Solar project will receive $90 million from an Energy Department grant.

The grant will assist the project in building solar facilities in Clearfield County on former mine lands. Casey advocated to the U.S. Department of Energy for the project, which is expected to produce enough energy to power 70,000 homes per year.

“The coal communities of Central Pennsylvania have powered the industrial development of our Nation. With this investment, they’ll continue to do so long into the future,” Casey said. “This grant is not only a major step towards building the clean energy economy, but a signal that Pennsylvania’s energy communities will lead the way for years to come.”
