CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — In 1924, the Grassflat Volunteer Fire Company opened its doors and began serving the community. Now, 100 years later, the company is celebrating the milestone.

On Saturday, March 4 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the fire company, there will be activities such as free balloon animals, an auction, kids activities and food. Emergency vehicles such as ambulances, Pennsylvania State Police as well as fire trucks will also be on-site to tour. The main event is at noon where State Representative Dallas Kephart will dedicate the new flagpole at the fire company that was donated by members of the community.

The celebration is also a time to look back in history and simply connect with the community.

“Unfortunately, the community kind of only sees the firefighters when there’s an emergency, when they need something from us,” Secretary Shawna Pryle said. “There’s no emergency it’s just to get to know the fire company members and chat with the community.”

Chief Shane Michaels emphasized that the fire company is always there to help people who are going through tough times. Some fireman who have helped through the years have had family members who volunteer today.

“My grandfather helped start the original Grassflat Fire company,” Pryle said. “My dad was a chief for nearly 40 years and now my brother is the chief. It’s really exciting for me because it’s been a family affair over the past hundred years, essentially.”

The fire company also wants to be able to thank members of the community, if it wasn’t for them many things wouldn’t be taken care of. Over the years the company has updated its entire fleet with new technology, trucks, and equipment.

“Throughout the years we’ve taken care of the community and upgraded equipment,” Michaels said. “We’ve worked through problems in the community as well as problems with money and being able to buy said equipment.”

The celebration will allow the company to show the community what the donations go towards. Michaels is excited for everyone to get a look at the equipment in use and where the company is headed in the future. While the company is 100 years in, they have the next 100 years to look forward to, Michaels highlighted.
