Blair County bridge dedicated to Korean War hero

BLAIR COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — A bridge in Blair County was dedicated to Private who served in the Korean War.

The bridge was dedicated to Army Pvt. William E. Green, who was mortally wounded Sept. 9, 1952, while serving in the Korean War. Green’s family joined Rep. Jim Gregory (R-Blair) and Sen. Judy Ward (R-Blair/Fulton/Huntingdon/Juniata/Mifflin) in dedicating the bridge, which was authorized through Act 17 of 2023.

A graduate of Roaring Spring High School, Green worked as a machinist for the Pennsylvania Railroad before being inducted into the U.S. Army, where he served in Company A, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Division.

Green, whose loved ones fondly called him “Scoop,” was serving as a member of the machine gun squad when killed in action in the Satae-Ri/Heartbreak Ridge region of North Korea. He is interred in Greenlawn Cemetery.

“Pvt. Green represents the best of us,” Gregory said. “The signs for Pvt. William E. Green Memorial Bridge will help us all reflect on his service, honor and sacrifice as we use this busy road. His commitment and patriotism are aspirational.”

The bridge is on Pa. Route 36 (Woodbury Pike) over Halter Creek in Blair and Freedom townships. It is used by about 6,800 drivers every day.
