CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Centre County Commissioners proclaimed this week as emergency medical services week.

On Tuesday, May 21, EMS workers from Penn State, Snowshoe, Centre LifeLink and other services shared their experiences during the commissioner’s meeting. The commissioners said that it’s important to highlight the crucial role that EMS has in the community.

The proclamation coincides with National EMS Week, which is also marking its 50th anniversary. EMS Week is the time to honor the entire EMS profession and its importance in protecting the safety and health of everyone.

The commissioners also want others in the community to remember all that they do and show their support for them.

“Most importantly and functionally, you know, just say thank you,” Steve Dershem, a commissioner said. “When those, when you see those vehicles drive by, just realize that they’re doing pretty important work and you folks represent that and they appreciate everything you do to keep us safe. And without you, I don’t know what we do.”

The National EMS Week takes place from May 19 – 25. This year’s theme, “ Honoring Our Past. Forging Our Future ,” hoped to remind everyone to acknowledge the foundational work of those who came before us, while also striving to build and lead the EMS system to the future.
