BLAIR COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — Summer is winding down, but it’s not over just yet, so in the meantime, there are still a few things you should be mindful of with the warm weather.

WTAJ News spoke to a CVS Pharmacist about summer wellness tips that people need to know.

Jessica Read, a Pharmacist with CVS said that common medications such as ibuprofen, antibiotics, diuretics, and acne medications can cause an increased risk of photosensitivity.

“I would highly recommend that you check in with your local pharmacist or your healthcare provider. They can review your list of medications and let you know if they cause an increased risk of photosensitivity,” Read said.

Read also noted that it’s important to think about poison ivy and how to treat it.

“The typical recommendation for poison ivy is going to be calamine lotion over the counter. One thing that you might not think of for poison ivy is how to help with that itch. And I would recommend an oral antihistamine. So if you’re struggling with that itch at bedtime, I would recommend taking a Benadryl, Read added.”

Read also recommended keeping bug bite areas clean, and staying hydrated with water and electrolytes.

“Even if you’re not on any medications, I would recommend that we still have great sun safety practices, making sure that you’re wearing an SPF of 30 every day, making sure that you spend some time in the shade when you’re outdoors and making sure that you wear protective clothing such as a hat,” Read said.

At the end of summer, it will also be time to stop by your local pharmacist and get immunizations.
