PENNSYVLANIA (WTAJ) — After conversations of Pennsylvania introducing legislation that could end yearly inspections, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has made a statement.

The bill mentioned was introduced by Senator Marty Flynn (Lackawanna and Luzerne) in Aug. 2023. The legislation calls for the modernization of vehicle inspections in Pennsylvania by removing the yearly inspection mandate. However, it is important to note, that the legislation is still in the Senate, yet to be voted on. This means that the House hasn’t voted and in turn nothing has been sent to Governor Josh Shapiro.

WTAJ reached out to PennDOT, asking for confirmation that yearly inspections in Pennsylvania will remain the same until further notice.

Will Pa. be getting rid of yearly car inspections?

Pennsylvania still requires annual safety inspections, and there has not been any bill signed into law reducing or removing this requirement. Texas recently passed a law eliminating their state inspection requirement. Coverage of this Texas change is circulating widely, but it does not apply to PA.

Safety inspections can prevent vehicle failures on highways and crashes that could result in serious injury or death. Inspection fees are posted at official inspection states and do not include repairs to correct vehicle defects.
