College Township to repair Nittany Mall sinkhole

COLLEGE TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WTAJ) – Months after a sinkhole opening on Nittany Mall property, steps are being taken to fix it – but not by the mall itself.

Assistant Township Manager Mike Bloom said College Township was first made aware of the sinkhole in December 2023. They sent a letter to the mall telling them that it needed to be fixed. Initially, the mall hired a firm to come take a look at the damage.

“That process went along just fine up until about April when there was a secondary opening of a sinkhole,” Bloom said. “And at that point, and as part of their evaluation and working with their contractor, they stopped work in April of 2024.”

Bloom says the township continued to reach out via email and letters but received no response. They also filed five individual civil complaints, three of which are still pending. The project still needed done, so the township decided to complete it themselves at the cost of $153,000. That big price tag will eventually be back-billed to the Nittany Mall to recoup costs.

Bloom also mentioned that solicitors from both groups have begun talking since Friday, Aug. 16, but he was unable to say more. WTAJ reached out to Namdar Realty Group for comment but received no response.

There is not a “good timeline” right now for when the sinkhole will be fixed, but Bloom says they hope to get on it “as soon as possible.”
