Curwensville 9-year-old speaks up to save pet chicken

CLEARFIELD COUNTY (WTAJ) – The Curwensville Council has been working on a draft ordinance addressing the raising of poultry in the borough and it caused quite the stir for one girl.

The council has been discussing one section that discourages roosters from being raised in the borough because of their morning crowing tendencies.

However, for one 9 year old chicken owner, Lilly Mione, the ordinance could have meant she would lose one of her favorite chickens. A rooster named Mr. Mohawk.

“I didn’t think it was okay because people have dogs, you know, and they leave them out and they bark all day and all night and that’s just as loud as a rooster calling a couple of times a day,” Lilly said.

So Lilly did something that most fourth graders wouldn’t do. She prepared a speech and delivered it to the Curwensville Borough Council.

“We were extremely impressed and extremely happy to see someone come to council and not be afraid to come to a group of older people and say, this is what I want. It’s very admirable” Councilman Ryan Schall said.

The council said that the ordinance is still in the preliminary stages but no matter the outcome, Lilly’s chickens, including Mr. Mohawk will be grandfathered in.

“Telling me that made me very happy because if we weren’t going to keep it I was going to give it to my best friend and I wasn’t very happy about that because I wanted to keep him,” Lilly said.

For Lilly who is about to start her fourth grade school year, she was happy to argue her with Mr. Mohawk by her side.
