STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WTAJ) – State College is officially a trans sanctuary thanks to a resolution voted on unanimously by the borough council Monday.

The resolution allows and protects gender-affirming care for all trans people. The policy is aimed at safeguarding the trans community and recognizing them as important members of State College.

Centre LGBTQ+ says that many areas around the country criminalize this type of care, so State College is a “strong ally” in its eyes. The resolution also protects the rights of youth who are looking to transition, saying that this care leads to better mental health.

“We are vital parts of Centre County and all of the towns and townships where we all live and work every day,” Centre LGBTQ+ Board Member Michel Lee Garrett said. “Together we have the power to make this a safe and beautiful place for all people, regardless of their identity.”

Centre County’s commissioners say that this policy is still new to them and will consider making a similar resolution in the future, but could not make any further comment on the subject.
