BELLEFONTE, Pa. (WTAJ) – Rep. Paul Takac and the House Majority Policy Committee visited Actuated Medical to tour a prime example of rural economic development, while also discussing the needs of the community.

Upon arrival, the group took a tour of the facility to see what they are developing. Actuated Medical focuses on developing and researching medical equipment to suit the needs of patients.

“They, of course, could relate to several of the devices we’re developing,” Owner Maureen Mulvihill said.

After the tour, the group sat down for a roundtable discussion. The main topic was rural economic development and the policies surrounding it: what’s working, and what isn’t. Rural areas in Pennsylvania all face similar issues according to the committee: Population loss, lack of transportation and no broadband internet.

Takac says that in order to increase rural development, they need to invest in the local businesses there. Investors can be picky with where they choose to go, but Takac says he has already sweetened the deal by championing a $50 million rural jobs investment tax credit from the latest budget, which he thinks will help.

“What we want to do is create opportunities for entrepreneurs and business owners,” Takac said.
