TYRONE, Pa. (WTAJ) — With the discovery of a lead mine, a new exhibit will be making its way to the Fort Roberdeau National Historical Site.

“We’ve had some great research recently done into the fort by Juniata College, and we know where the original lead mine was,” Glenn Nelson, the director for Fort Roberdeau said. “So, we’re looking to make a new exhibit, something new and attractive for the visitors.”

Fort Roberdeau was one of the first lead mining areas during the 1700’s. It was a key asset to aid the colonists during the Revolutionary War.

“General Washington was looking for domestic supplies of lead,” Nelson said. “We were one of the first mining operations to provide lead for ammunitions for the Revolutionary War.”

On Tuesday’s Blair County Commissioners Meeting, Nelson approached the stand to ask the county for approval for the $15,000 donation to help restore the mine to become an exhibit. The motion was passed the same day.

The restoration project will look to be completed by the end of the year, but will not be open to the public. Visitors will have to wait until next year to see the mine.

“As we approach the 250th celebration of our country’s independence, this will be the new attraction for 2025,” Nelson said.
