ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) — The James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Long-Term Care Units have been placed on “Outbreak Status” due to COVID-19 exposures.

During outbreak status, masking is required on both the 5th and 6th floor for visitors and team members. Family and friends can still visit those who live in the living centers, but are asked to take caution if they are feeling sick. Veterans who have tested positive have been isolated per VHA guidance.

The status is scheduled to end on Sept. 18 for floor five and Sept. 19 for floor six. However, the center noted that these dates are fluid as workers continue to monitor the situation and make decisions based on what is best for the residents and patients.

“We have implemented universal masking on these neighborhoods,” Infection Control Officer Abby Handlon said. “This means our team members will be always wearing masks on these units and temperature checks are being completed upon entry and we ask our visitors to do the same. If you are feeling ill, we ask you stay home until your symptoms resolve.”

Currently, only the inpatient units are impacted by the outbreak. The rest of the main medical center and Community Based Outpatient Clinics are operating as normal. If anyone is experiencing COVID-19 related symptoms, they are asked to wear a mask.
