Hollidaysburg Community Garden in need of volunteers

HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) — The St. Vincent de Paul Gardens at the Monastery need volunteers to help with the remainder of the fall harvest.

The community garden is located at the Saint Bernardine’s Monastery at 793 Monastery Rd, Hollidaysburg.

The garden takes up two acres and operates under the umbrella of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society as a nonprofit. All of the money that the garden uses is fundraised.

“We’ve had a great season so far, and with the season ending in October, we need to have volunteers come out and help us with tearing down from crops that we’ve already planted this year as well as some fall crops,” Erika Renwick, Vice Chair and Treasurer of the board for the St. Vincent de Paul Gardens at the Monastery said.

In the next several weeks the garden will harvest vegetables and donate to those in need within the community.

So far this year, the garden has harvested between eight and nine thousand vegetables after planting 25 to 30 different types.

“This one’s really making an impact in our community. It’s helping those individuals and families in need, providing them with nutritious vegetables and also helping address food insecurity in Blair and Cambria counties,” Renwick said.

Volunteer hours are on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings starting at 8 a.m. There are also volunteer hours on Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting at 6 p.m.
